20, 2022, in Washington. After nearly five years as America’s 75th Postmaster General, and after informing the Governors in February of my intention to retire, I have today informed the Postal Service Board of Governors that today will be my last day in this role," DeJoy said in a statement. I believe strongly that the organization is well positioned and capable of carrying forward and fully implementing the many strategies and initiatives that comprise our transformation and modernization," he added. Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will take on the role until the Postal Service Board of Governors names a permanent replacement.I shall cheer on America’s 76th Postmaster General and the 640,000 men and women of the United States Postal Service who I have called my colleagues and friends for close to five years," he said. "It has been one of the pleasures of my life and a crowning achievement of my career to have been associated with this cherished institution, the United States Postal Service.” DeJoy had said he planned to cut 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the U.S. Postal Service budget -- and he’d do that working with Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, which is also known as DOGE, according to a letter sent to members of Congress. Postal workers, including mail carriers, gathered in multiple states ahead of his resignation to protest the cuts and the plan they say will dismantle the service. Many said they are concerned about the direction of the agency. The USPS issued a statement soon after DeJoy made his plans public, with Amber McReynolds, who is the chairwoman of the Board of Governors, praising his efforts. She again reiterated her sentiments Monday. Louis DeJoy has steadfastly served the nation and the Postal Service over the past five years,” McReynolds said in a statement. “The Governors greatly appreciate his enduring leadership and his tireless efforts to modernize the Postal Service and reverse decades of neglect."I commend Postmaster General DeJoy for inspiring the Postal Service with strategic direction, a competitive spirit, and a culture of achievement that comes from the successful implementation of large-scale change," she said. "I have seen this spirit of purpose grow steadily during my time on the Board of Governors, and I am confident it will continue to grow as progress begets further progress, and the promise of a transformed and modernized Postal Service is fully realized.”when he responded to the news by describing DeJoy's tenure as "a disaster" for the people of Vermont, as well as postal workers. "DeJoy and the national management of the USPS failed to promptly reopen a fully-functioning Post Office in downtown Montpelier following the July 2023 floods, ultimately taking 15 months to restore the essential service for Vermont’s Capital City," "At the same time, DeJoy’s restructuring plan has led to unacceptable mail delivery delays across Vermont, especially in rural areas of the state. In response to legitimate criticism, DeJoy has demonstrated an utter disregard and, at times, disdain for Congress and the communities it represents," he added.
