State capture may officially be over, but some of its players are still in circulation, in both the public and private sector, writes David Lewis
State capture may officially be over, but some of its players are still in circulation, in both the public and private sectorCorruption Watch has spent much of the eight years of its existence in the era of state capture. Though there were always pockets within the political and public-sector leadership that were supportive of our work, our relationship with the state throughout that period was overwhelmingly antagonistic.
This change in the political environment has profoundly influenced our strategies and our day-to-day work. Strategically, it has enabled us to focus on those sectors and activities where our efforts will impact most directly on the realisation of basic human rights and social justice. We have also attempted to identify the vulnerabilities in our legal and policy framework that enabled state capture and to advocate for policies that will plug these gaps. This is manifest in our work on the criminal justice system and in our campaign for greater transparency in the processes governing the appointment of public-sector leaders.
