The House breaks 100-year record as GOP nominee Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) fails on tenth ballot for speaker despite offering fresh concessions to hard-right Republican opponents. In 1923, Speaker Frederick Gillett (R-Mass.) was reelected on the ninth ballot.
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy was defeated in both the eighth and ninth ballots to be elected as House speaker on Jan. 5.
Republican Kevin McCarthy was defeated for the ninth time in three days in his quest to become House speaker. The vote tallies have seen little change from earlier ballots, despite pleas from holdouts’ colleagues, public statements from former president Donald Trump and days of private meetings between GOP members.
The 200 votes McCarthy got on the ninth ballot mirrored earlier rounds of voting, and the bloc of holdouts were again split: 17 voted for Byron Donalds , three backed Kevin Hern , and Indiana’s Victoria Spartz continued her streak of voting “present.”
