Since the pandemic, schools are facing an uphill battle to bring down the rates of chronic absenteeism, which has more than doubled.
by The National DeskFILE - Optima Ed CEO Erika Donalds joined The National Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat to discuss the issue.
“Unfortunately, since the pandemic, we have not seen the drop back to normal absenteeism levels and we know why that is,” she said. “It's because parents do not value in-person attendance in school or the messaging that they received during the pandemic that being in school in-person is not important.”
Last year, an estimated 26% of public school students were considered chronically absent, according to data from the American Enterprise Institute. “It wasn't important to the teachers at the time. We saw the teachers union fight so hard not to bring students back in person. Since the pandemic, even those students who have come back to school and those who have been chronically absent have seen rampant grade inflation,” Donalds said. “So we are lying to parents about how absenteeism is affecting their child's academic performance.”
