His veteran presence was prized when Ohio State opened the season, but Gene Brown III is fighting for a role after suffering a preseason concussion.

Third-year wing Gene Brown III talks recovery from a concussion and previews Purdue in this Jan. 4, 2023 interview. It was a simple basketball play, but it was one that would inexorably alter the hopes forWhen the Buckeyes opened preseason camp, the versatile wing reported as one of only two players on the roster to have played in more than two games for the program last season.

When Ohio State knocked off No. 1 Duke at home 12 days after losing to the Musketeers, Brown had to watch from inside the locker room. He returned against Towson on Dec. 8, played in 10 straight games and then missed two more with a foot injury. Once Brown was cleared from concussion protocol, it was another 10 days or so before he was able to be physically cleared for game action. In the interim, Brown said he was working out 3-4 times a day to try and build up his wind and get his body ready for the demands of high-major basketball.
