Long-range weather models suggest a 'possible wet period' could return to California, beginning Feb. 22, and forecasters are already monitoring a storm that could arrive on Wednesday, possibly bringing rain and low-elevation snow to the San Francisco Bay…
in California, but the National Weather Service said it's too soon nail down the forecast details.
"There's still a long ways to go before we can get a clear idea of what this system will look like," David King, a meteorologist with the weather service's Bay Area office, told SFGATE on Thursday morning."It does look like right now, the forecast is calling for colder temperatures aloft so getting low-elevation snow is possible, but we can't forecast exceptionally low-elevation snow.
King added there's no indication that San Francisco, which very rarely sees snow, could get a dusting."When we get these cool air masses, snow levels do drop and we see snow on local peaks such as Mount Hamilton," he said."Could something happen in San Francisco? That's very doubtful at this point, but it's not something that we're going to just brush off. We're watching the forecast.
The early forecast reveals that the storm will drop down from the Vancouver area with the main impact occurring Wednesday morning, though the timing could change."It's not giving any signal of an atmospheric river," King said."It's just a system dropping down from the north. I can't say right now, 'X amount of precipitation is going to fall or for this duration'.
Great consensus is building among weather models for a potentially prolonged cold and wetter than normal weather pattern to begin next week in California.
