For MJ Rodriguez, waking up in the morning is her activism: “I’m obviously fighting for my community simply because I’m trans, and I have to do that”
Rodriguez recalls walking the carpet at the Season 1 premiere about this time last year. “I just reveled in that moment,” she says. “I lived in that moment. I felt every piece of it because my mindset always is that it could be gone in just a blink of an eye.”
“When I started ‘Rent,’ I already had an idea of how I was going to portray Angel, simply because of who I was at that moment,” Rodriguez says. “Everyone always perceived her as a drag queen, but the reality of the matter is that I truly believe she was a trans woman.” Rodriguez was surprised when even her agent at the time stuck by her. “I remember calling my agency and saying, ‘Listen, you guys, I don’t know if you’re going to drop me or whatever the case may be, but I just need to let you guys know that I’m a female. That’s how I feel, and that’s how I’ve always been feeling ever since I was a child,’” she remembers. “They just welcomed me with open arms and said, ‘We don’t care. We love you, and we already pretty much knew.’ And I was like, ‘OK, good.
