New Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has now confirmed his latest decision on Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of their next matches in June. 👀 More here! ▶
The former Everton boss became the head coach of A Selecao in January, and named his first squad in March. An important aspect Martinez quickly addressed in his new managerial role was Ronaldo's future, with the Spaniard insisting, upon his unveiling, that the forward, who appeared to hint at international retirement after Portugal's exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in December, is in his plans for the team.
As such, the 49-year-old called the veteran, who had since taken his football career to Saudi Arabia, up for his squad for the 2024 UEFA European Championship qualifiers in March, and in those matches against Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, Ronaldo scored braces in both games. Martinez has now confirmed the Al Nassr striker will be in his next squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers in June.
"Yes, that [Ronaldo will be called up again] is my position," the manager told Portuguese broadcaster"There is no other player in world football with 198 international caps, and that is something very valuable for us. "I think Cristiano played a very positive and important role in the games we played in March and it's important to continue with that attitude on a day-to-day basis."He plays in a key position, he is a striker who can make a difference."
