A Portland man is safe after a close encounter with a cougar in the Columbia River Gorge.

The Angel's Rest Trail on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge was closed Thursday after a man reported he was stalked by a cougar while trail running earlier in the week. Ben Blumenfeld was trail running on the Angel’s Rest trail on Tuesday evening when he said the cougar jumped out of the woods.

“I got big and put my arms up and started shouting, ‘I’m OK cougar! I’m OK cougar!’” he said. “Screaming at this cougar, making eye contact, showing my teeth and trying to be as big and scary as I could. Blumenfeld said the cougar followed him for about a quarter of a mile. He used his iPhone to connect to a satellite and sent an SOS call, and an emergency dispatcher walked him through what to do next.
