The Porter County Board of Health voted unanimously Monday evening to recommend five candidates for its open seat to the Board of Commissioners following the recent ouster of former board member Jessica Jepsen on Sept. 12.

for comments she posted to social media regarding the COVID-19 vaccine in which she identified herself as a member of the board and questioned the vaccine’s safety. Commissioners admonished her for her post before voting unanimously to remove her from the board. To comply with Indiana Code 16-20-2-11 the five members present — Dr. Ronald Michael was absent — heard briefly about the resumes of the candidates who all identify as Republicans.

“This is, I think, kind of an exciting change or difference,” said board chair Dr. Linda Boxum. “We as a board get to provide our due diligence.” Dr. Derek Gaspar is the second candidate and practices family medicine locally. “He has a lot to say and he does it in a diplomatic manner,” Boxum said. Boxum clarified for the board that the final appointment is at the pleasure of the Board of Commissioners.

Not everyone in the full audience agreed. “I expected every board member to suggest a candidate or two and cull it down to five,” said Debra Silvert, of Valparaiso. “There was no process to it. I thought this meeting was going to be the process.”
