One artist's sand designs and another's whimsical beach sculptures are delighting coastal communities in northern New South Wales, where locals say the 'beautiful, positive gestures' brighten their days.

It's a sunny midweek afternoon and low tide and a vast stretch of flat sand has created an enticing blank canvas for artist Alex McNaught.

A photographer by profession, Mr McNaught began creating sand art between jobs as a hobby, and is now planning to expand his designs."Sand art was something I found easy to do … just drawing lines and making pleasing shapes turned out to be so good," he said."People regularly say, 'Thank you, you've made my day, that's fantastic'; it's been visitors from overseas, or locals, even teenage boys give me the thumbs up.

"It's such a beautiful, positive gesture to create such amazing artwork for the whole community to enjoy," Ms Schubert said.Mr McNaught said he planned to continue to refine his beach designs as his skills increased, to give people another reason to visit the region. The retiree has become something of a Port Macquarie identity since he began creating his art installations when he moved to the region eight years ago.

He said his father could no longer enjoy walks along the beach with his mates, so he crafted designs that his dad could see by the water to brighten his day.Mr Thomson-Jones has embraced creating unique beach art displays ever since, and often works for many hours through the night to complete them, so they are ready to greet people on the morning of each public holiday.
