The Porsche Taycan GTS, driven by Jens Richter, sets a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous drift on ice, covering 10.875 miles in 46 minutes.
Porsche has once again proven the capabilities of its electric vehicle, the Taycan , by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous drift on ice. On January 14th, at Porsche 's Arctic Center in Lavi, Finland, experienced driver Jens Richter navigated a Taycan GTS for an impressive 46 minutes, completing 132 laps totaling 10.875 miles (17.503 kilometers). This record-breaking feat wasn't achieved on the first attempt.
The extreme load on the Taycan's drivetrain caused the ice track to deteriorate faster than anticipated, forcing the team to abort the initial run after 6.8 miles (11 kilometers). However, Porsche strategized for the second attempt, switching to tires with shorter spikes and capitalizing on the cooler ice temperatures that descended as darkness fell. This adjustment proved successful, allowing Richter to masterfully execute the drift using solely throttle and steering inputs. Richter, a Porsche Experience instructor, expressed his elation at the achievement, stating, 'With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities. And this time even with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so well even under extreme conditions speaks volumes for its excellent chassis and balanced performance.' The Taycan's success on the ice track reinforces its reputation as a high-performance electric vehicle capable of delivering exceptional handling and control in challenging conditions. This achievement adds to the Taycan's impressive record of Guinness World Records, which includes a 210-lap drift in 2020, the fastest speed in an enclosed building in 2021, and the highest altitude change by an EV in 2023.

Porsche Records US Sales Despite Taycan SlumpPorsche achieved a record 76,157 vehicle sales in the US for 2024, driven by strong performance of the Cayenne, 911, and 718 models. Despite a 37% drop in Taycan sales, the brand's SUVs remained the top sellers, with the Macan and Cayenne recording notable increases. The success of the 718, particularly the Boxster and Cayman, is attributed to the anticipation of their transition to electric powertrain. Meanwhile, Porsche is extending the production of the ICE-powered Macan in North America due to the uncertainty surrounding EV tax credits.
