Downtown Oakland’s Port Bar was vandalized. The LGBTQ bar’s owners feel it was a targeted attack.

The owners of a popular queer bar in downtown Oakland are reaching out for community support after their business was vandalized in what they suspect to be a targeted attack. Port Bar co-owner Sean Sullivan said he has been dealing with “extensive broken glass” after the bar’s windows were shattered Wednesday morning. The bar was empty at the time, and no one appears to have entered the building, he added. “We were targeted. This is not a smash and grab,” Sullivan told SFGATE.

“Hate crimes are on the rise against LGBTQ people as well as legislation to restrict our existence! These things go hand & hand,” the bar shared in the caption of an Instagram post following Wednesday’s attack. Sullivan opened Port Bar with co-owner Richard Fuentes in 2016. Since then, the bar has become a cherished part of downtown Oakland’s queer nightlife scene, remaining popular even as a slew of other queer bars and venues have popped up around the area over the past year.
