'While the poppies have changed, the meaning stays the same'
The annual Poppy Appeal is being launched across Greater Manchester today - with a drastic new design unveiled.
The Royal British Legion said the design and material has been in development for three years. Around 50 per cent of the fibres used in each poppy have been recovered from the waste used in the production of coffee cups. Professor Paola Lettieri, from UCL's department of chemical engineering, said: "We looked at its carbon footprint and factors like how much water and resources go into making it, in what's called a life cycle assessment. By replacing the single-use plastic with a paper-based design, and increasing the amount of recycled paper used, UCL found that the new poppy design has a 40 per cent smaller carbon footprint and a similar reduction in its overall impact on the environment.
The poppy became a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future in the aftermath of the First World War. Since 1921, the legion's army of collectors has been at the heart of the appeal.
