Popovich honors McCombs on former Spurs owner's 95th birthday

"More important than basketball, somebody we all know was 95 years old today, and it was not me," Popovich said."It’s Red McCombs. Ninety-five. And since this is our 50th anniversary, we wouldn’t be having this without Red McCombs."Popovich was hired by McCombs in 1988 as part of Larry Brown’s staff. The young coach - he was only 39 when he arrived in San Antonio - and the influential, dynamic billionaire eventually formed a tight bond.

McCombs sold his family’s substantial stake in the team in 1982 to buy the Denver Nuggets. After selling the Nuggets in 1985, McCombs repurchased his interest in the Spurs in 1986. In May 1988, he bought the Spurs outright from Drossos and other investors for $47 million.
