Pope Francis inaugurated the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope by opening the Holy Door of Saint Peter's Basilica. The event, a celebration of faith and renewal, will continue until January 6, 2026.

Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of Saint Peter's Basilica on December 24, 2024, marking the official beginning of the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope. During his Christmas Eve Mass, he emphasized that the Christ Child of Bethlehem offers infinite hope and joy to the world. This Ordinary Jubilee, celebrated every 25 years, will conclude on January 6, 2026, the Feast of the Epiphany. The Holy Door , considered sacred, calls all who enter to live holy lives.

Following the Pope's lead, representatives of the faithful crossed the threshold, symbolizing the millions who will visit St. Peter's Basilica during the Holy Year. The custom dates back to Pope Martin V in 1423, who opened a Holy Door for the Extraordinary Jubilee at the Lateran Basilica. In St. Peter's, it was first used in 1450, its location unchanged since Pope Alexander VI established the current ritual in 1500
