Following the Pope's lead, representatives of the faithful crossed the threshold, symbolizing the millions who will visit St. Peter's Basilica during the Holy Year. The custom dates back to Pope Martin V in 1423, who opened a Holy Door for the Extraordinary Jubilee at the Lateran Basilica.
