BREAKING: Pope Francis was taken to hospital for surgery on his intestine earlier today. The Vatican said the 86-year-old would be hospitalised for several days.
The Vatican confirmed the 86-year-old will undergo an operation on his intestine after a check-up yesterday.
He will be put under general anesthesia and will remain under the care of doctors at Gemelli hospital in Rome for several days. This comes two years after he had 13 inches of his colon removed because of an inflammation and narrowing of the large intestine. Francis has battled health problems in recent years, forcing him to cancel a series of public appearances.
Just before Easter, the pontiff also spent five days in hospital with a lung infection after complaining of breathing difficulties.
