A student has been killed and another raped, just outside the University of Fort Hare’s Alice campus.The university’s JP Roodt confirmed the students’ off campus attack.

“It is with deep regret that the University of Fort Hare today announces that the scourge of GBV and femicide has affected our student body. Last night, a group of three female students returned to their residences from town.“They were subsequently attacked resulting in the murder of one female student, and the hospitalisation of another, following an incident of rape.

He says the university’s senior management will engage the next of kin of both the deceased and surviving victims. “The issue of insufficient lighting in the town of Alice, where the very tragic events transpired, has been a longstanding concern for the university. Loadshedding has also exacerbated this situation.”

JP adds that UFH Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhela Buhlungu has extended an invitation for an emergency meeting to the mayor’s office and police to discuss continuous public and municipal interventions to create a conducive and safe environment for students, including continuous patrolling and improved lighting in public areas linking the university to town.

“The University community - including students, employees and alumni - will hold peaceful marches over the next few days which will be coordinated by the University’s GBV Prevention Unit, the SRC and community-based organisations active in the fight against GBV.”Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana has confirmed the murder, saying the 23-year-old woman was found with multiple stab wounds.
