Cardiovascular health in a patient's mid-30s is associated with premature brain aging in later years. MedTwitter

Poor cardiovascular health in someone's mid-30s was associated with premature brain ageing in later years, found a study that related brain age to a range of known life-course risk factors for dementia, and imaging features of cerebrovascular disease., suggested that brain-predicted age was associated with cardiovascular risk, imaging features , and biomarkers of neurodegeneration , cognitive ability, and future brain atrophy.

"We hope this technique could one day be a useful tool for identifying people at risk of accelerated ageing, so that they may be offered early, targeted prevention strategies to improve their brain health.".Prof Schott and colleagues studied participants all born in a single week in 1946 in the UK, who are all part of the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development 1946 British Birth Cohort .

Brain-predicted age difference provides a single summary metric integrating brain decline due to diseases and normal ageing. Increased cardiovascular risk at ages 36 and 69 years was associated with an older brain-predicted age. Cerebrovascular disease burden, lower cognitive performance and increased serum neurofilament light concentration were associated with an older brain age. Also, a higher brain-predicted age was associated with future hippocampal atrophy over the subsequent 2 years.
