Autonomous driving is 'hard' when 'irrational' factors come into play, CEO says
, James was an integral part of Baidu’s engineering leadership team. At Baidu, James was responsible for setting the technical direction of a variety of fields including advertising, infrastructure, big data, and cloud computing. Later, as the Chief Architect of the Autonomous Driving division, James led the overall strategy and development of Baidu’s autonomous vehicle.
Commonly known by his handle “ACRush” within the programming community, Tiancheng is a 10-year medalist of the TopCoder competitions and 2-time champion of the global programming competition Google Code Jam. Before co-founding , Tiancheng was the youngest T10 engineer at Baidu where he focused on autonomous vehicles. Tiancheng began his career at Google, where he worked on autonomous vehicle technology at Google X .

He has held professorships at many institutions including MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Princeton, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Tsinghua. Professor Yao is widely recognized for his contribution to computer science and is the only Chinese recipient of the Turing Award, the most prestigious award in the field.
Professor Yao is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, among others.
