Pompeo's remarks come two days after he said the U.S. was looking at potentially banning TikTok as well as other Chinese social media apps citing national security concerns.

U.S. officials have long complained that Chinese intellectual property theft has cost the economy billions of dollars in revenue and thousands of jobs and that it threatens national security.

"The infrastructure of this next 100 years must be a communications infrastructure that is based on a Western ideal of private property and protection of private citizens information in a transparent way," the nation's top diplomat said Wednesday at the State Department.
