US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says it's time for Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to 'leave,' adding, 'He has no answers for the Venezuelan people and the United States is determined to assist the Venezuelan people in restoring democracy.'
"We've watched throughout the day, it's been a long time since anyone's seen Maduro," Pompeo said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on"The Situation Room.""He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning as we understand it and the Russians indicated he should stay.""He was headed for Havana," Pompeo said.
Maduro understands what will happen if he gets on that airplane."Read More"He knows our expectations," Pompeo said when repeatedly pressed on the question.Pompeo reiterated his support for opposition leader Juan Guaido amid an escalating situation in Venezuela. On Tuesday morning, Guaido, standing alongside a group of soldiers in Caracas, announced an uprising and called for his supporters to take to the streets in an effort to oust Maduro.
