Tensions resurfaced over defense spending. Canada complained about being called a national security threat, and Turkey accused the State Department of being untruthful.
By Carol Morello Carol Morello National reporter focusing on foreign policy and State Department Email Bio Follow April 4 at 5:00 PM Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on NATO members to “stand together” and confront evolving threats, even as resentments old and new flared at a meeting of alliance diplomats Thursday in Washington.
“It’s important for them to make the case to their citizenry why collective deterrence is necessary,” he said. A State Department readout of the meeting said Pompeo had warned of “potentially devastating consequences” if Turkey sends forces against Kurds in northeast Syria and expressed “concerns” about Ankara’s plans to purchase the S-400 air defense missile system from Russia.
The Trump administration has threatened to halt delivery of the F-35 fighter jet over the transaction.
