Pompeii : Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston , a new series from National Geographic , blends cinematic scripted drama with investigative documentary storytelling to revisit the ancient Roman city in the hours before and during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius .
Hosted by Loki star Tom Hiddleston and executive produced by Loki's Kevin R. Wright, the series is guided by a team of archaeologists, historians, geologists, and disaster experts. Hiddleston uncovers remarkable evidence and the stories of real people, challenging long-held assumptions about Pompeii and its final hours. The narrative reveals that many of those caught in the disaster may have had a chance to survive.
In the trailer, Hiddleston reflects on the death and destruction caused by the eruption, questioning whether that is the full story. The series features Hiddleston exploring the city, uncovering lost artefacts, and intercutting his findings with scripted drama depicting the citizens of Pompeii on the eve of its destruction. Hiddleston also comments that his findings don't quite match the spectacle of the Avengers films.
He expresses a lifelong fascination with the ancient world, describing classical antiquity as the foundation of Western culture and Pompeii as a gateway to understanding human history. The series aims to bring the ordinary people's final hours back into the light. Produced by Plimsoll Productions, with Tom Barbor-Might as showrunner and director, the series is written by Jessica Ruston and Mark Ravenhill, with additional writing by Kevin R. Wright and Tom Barbor-Might.
Executive producers include Grant Mansfield, Kevin R. Wright, Helen Flint, Alan Eyres, and Carolyn Payne for National Geographic. Aisling Brouwer will score the series. Tom McDonald, EVP of Content at National Geographic, states the partnership has invented a new genre of history programming that brings evidence and imagination together distinctively. Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston premieres on National Geographic on July 22, 2026, and will stream on Hulu and Disney+ the following day
