CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape boxing association has collaborated with Pollsmoor prison to bring a boxing program to the facility.
Many inmates choose to stay behind the prison gates because they’re unsure of life on the outside, but there is an alternative - as prisoners at Pollsmoor discovered.
"Being on the other side of where I am today, it really means a lot to me because it's where I came from. I grew from this and it made me a better person", said Aziz Kunert, a former inmate. The program encourages those incarcerated to have the hope of a life beyond prison as inmates are often left at a crossroads when they reach the end of their prison sentence.
"We don't look for talent only - that's not enough. We need those who have heart, who want to change, and participate and are disciplined. Those are the guys that we take. We have the power to train anyone to become a successful boxer", said Bonisile Mtshizana, the SRAC section head.While the idea of encouraging hardened criminals to fight it out appears counter-productive, the success of the program is proving to be the light at the end of a dark tunnel.
