Polls closed in South Africa after nationwide elections seen as a test for the ruling ANC’s popularity
A voter casts his ballot at a polling station during the South Africa's parliamentary and provincial elections, in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, South Africa, on May 8, 2019.
Polls opened at 0500 GMT with about 26.8 million voters registered to cast their ballots at 22,925 polling stations countrywide and voting passed off largely without incident, officials said.Preliminary results will emerge on Thursday, with an official winner declared on Saturday. The African National Congress, the party of Nelson Mandela that has been in power since 1994, is likely to win a majority but it will face a difficult challenge to do as well as five years ago.
The ANC also has vowed to embark on a program of seizing white-owned land without compensation, for which it needs a 67% majority to change South Africa's constitution. The largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has campaigned vigorously against corruption but its support among the country's black majority is limited because it is perceived as a white-run party. More than 40 smaller parties also are vying for power in the balloting.
