Redbridge group director Kos Samaras has discussed the slight"gradual erosion" of support for the Labor government ahead of the federal election.

It comes as a recent Newspoll reveals the Coalition has moved ahead of Labor in the two-party preferred basis for the first time since the May federal ballot."News poll numbers published overnight are pretty much in line with what we've been talking about now for some time," Mr Samaras told Sky News Australia.

"A gradual erosion of Labor's position, it is very slight, but what we're seeing is the trend is not their friend. "The fluctuations of the two-party preferred probably down to data noise, so we are looking at relatively the same sort of dynamic as we did two or three weeks ago, but the trend is not different.

"The problem that they're going to face as a political party come election time is they have to convince the Australian public that what they've experienced in the last two years is going to be drastically different to what they may experience in the second term of the Albanese government."
