Waymo officially expanded its service to include trips to and from San Antonio International Airport starting Tuesday, marking the first fully autonomous ride-hailing service to offer airport transportation in both San Antonio and Texas. The service is available to Waymo riders beginning today, according to the company. Passengers using Waymo can now be dropped off directly at terminal curbs, while pickups are available at the airport’s designated rideshare area. The expansion connects the airport to a growing service area that already spans more than 60 square miles across the city, including downtown, the River Walk, the Alamo, the convention center, North Star Mall and the fairgrounds. Airport officials say the move represents a step forward in innovation for the city’s transportation network. “San Antonio International Airport is committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovation,” said Jesus Saenz, director of airports for the City of San Antonio Aviation. “We are building the airport of the future, making this a significant milestone for Waymo, our city and travelers.” Waymo leaders say airport access has been one of the most requested features from riders. “Providing a safe and reliable ride to and from the airport is one of the most requested uses for Waymo riders, and we’re proud to bring that capability to San Antonians,” said Arica Gately, head of airport partnerships and business development for Waymo. She added that the expansion strengthens connections within the region’s broader transportation system. The company says its autonomous driving technology, known as the Waymo Driver, is designed to improve safety by eliminating common human factors like distraction or impairment. According to Waymo, data from more than 170 million rider-only miles shows its vehicles have been involved in significantly fewer serious crashes compared to human drivers, including fewer incidents involving injuries and pedestrians.Waymo, which began as Google’s self-driving car project in 2009, now operates thousands of vehicles nationwide and provides more than 500,000 paid trips each week.
