An exclusive Mail on Sunday poll reveals that 47 per cent of respondents believe Burnham should call a general election to legitimize his mandate, while 31 per cent disagree. The poll, conducted by Find Out Now, also shows that only 18 per cent of voters support increasing taxes to repair public finances, compared to 55 per cent who favor cutting public spending.
These findings emerge as Burnham's nascent administration grapples with internal chaos and confusion over Cabinet appointments, with key figures like Ed Miliband, Yvette Cooper, Angela Rayner, and Wes Streeting being linked to various roles in shifting speculation. Burnham's coronation speech outlined ambitious plans, including public ownership of water and energy, a new council house-building program, cuts to energy bills and bus fares, and social care reform funded by wealth or death taxes-policies he frames as correcting the 'wrong turns' of the 1980s.
