Vice President Harris sees her support rise when voters consider the topics of race and gender, according to a new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
This combination of photos shows Vice President Kamala Harris , left, on Aug. 7, 2024 and Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump on July 31, 2024.
The respondents were asked about issues such as immigration and foreign policy before they were asked to pick between Harris or former President Donald Trump. And a third of voters were only asked about the issues, without an additional question about a candidate’s race or gender. Cassino said it’s not inevitable that voters are thinking about race when picking between Harris and Trump, but it’s clear race matters in the election.
But among the group of nonwhite voters asked first about a candidate’s race, Harris’s support rose to 65%.The poll found women’s support moved away from Trump when the gender question was asked beforehand.
