A new poll reveals that Americans hold mixed views on President-elect Donald Trump's top Cabinet picks, particularly regarding the Department of Justice and the FBI. Many express concern about these agencies' neutrality under Trump's leadership.
President-elect Donald Trump 's top Cabinet picks are facing scrutiny this week as they undergo Senate confirmation hearings, and a new poll reveals that Americans hold mixed views on several of his most high-profile nominees. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll indicates that only about 20% of U.S. adults express 'extreme' or 'very' confidence that the Department of Justice will maintain fairness and impartiality during Trump's second term.
This concern extends to other key positions. Approval ratings for Pete Hegseth's nomination as Secretary of Defense are similarly low, with only about 20% expressing approval. Hegseth faced a contentious confirmation hearing on Tuesday. Similarly, a small percentage of Americans approve of Tulsi Gabbard as intelligence chief and Kash Patel as FBI director, while a third disapprove of each pick. The poll also suggests that Americans may be skeptical of Trump's strategy of selecting nominees like Hegseth, a former Fox News host with limited government experience. Only 25% view relying on individuals without government experience for policy advice as a positive thing, while 50% see it as detrimental. This sentiment is particularly pronounced among Democrats and independents, with Republicans more likely to endorse Trump's approach. The poll further reveals that Americans are apprehensive about the impartiality of the Justice Department and the FBI under Trump's second term. About half express 'not very' or 'not at all' confidence in their ability to act fairly, while roughly one-third express 'somewhat' confidence. This lack of trust is likely rooted in the heavy criticism these agencies have faced from Trump and his allies, including Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, and Patel, Trump's pick for FBI director. Even some Republicans express doubt in the Justice Department and the FBI, indicating that restoring public confidence in these institutions may be challenging. Among Trump's more controversial nominees is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been tapped as the top health official. Despite his ties to the Democratic party and his controversial stance on vaccines, Kennedy enjoys significant support among Republicans. While name recognition surpasses other nominees, overall approval ratings remain tepid, with 30% 'somewhat' or 'strongly' approving and 40% disapproving. Once nominated, Trump's picks are presented to the appropriate Senate committee for review. The committee then votes to recommend a candidate to the full Senate, which debates and ultimately confirms or rejects the nominee by a simple majority. Successful nominees are then sworn into office
