According to the group, their latest report shows nearly 70 percent of Texas AFT K-12 members considered leaving their jobs over the past year. Districts themselves are dealing with budget deficits and are forced to make cuts across the district, sometimes including teachers. Capo says that’s due to negligence on behalf of the state legislature.
“That money was earmarked for public education that didn’t end up getting spent because the bills associated with that money did not pass,” he said. “Cause the governor predicated that $5 billion on his voucher scheme.”On Monday, Texas AFT discussed how the state legislature can help schools in the upcoming 2025 legislative session. Universal pre-k was one of the first topics brought up.
“Lack of these quality childcare options in communities may be one of the many, many reasons that teachers are choosing to leave the classroom,” she said.
