The federal government still lists cannabis as a Schedule I drug, in spite of Biden’s campaign promise to remove it from that list and a majority of Americans saying that it should be legal to use recreationally.
, most Americans would welcome the legalization of marijuana. Just 28 percent of Americans want to keep the drug illegal at the federal level, according to the poll, while nearly 6 in 10 Americans say THAT it should be legal to use recreationally.
Along partisan divides, more than two thirds of Democrats said that marijuana should be made legal, and most independents agreed. Republicans were split on the matter, with 43 percent saying that marijuana should be legal and 44 percent saying that it shouldn’t be. In addition to the question of legalization, the poll also asked whether Americans backed the idea of pardoning people with nonviolent cannabis-related offenses. Overwhelmingly, most said that they would support such a move, with 65 percent saying that individuals with such convictions on their record should be pardoned, while only 23 percent opposed the idea.on the campaign trail.
