The sculpture became a target of controversy betweem the ACLU and the Christian Coalition''s American Center for Law and Justice when the ACLU began a legal offensive aimed at removing displays of the Ten Commandments from city halls and other civic buildings throughout the United States.
A federal appeals court will hear a challenge today to a Texas law that requires the display of the Ten Commandments in every classroom. Last August, a federal judge temporarily blocked 11 school districts, including Austin ISD, from displaying the posters. Then in November, a separate judge ordered 14 districts to remove the posters in response to a separate lawsuit filed by over a dozen families. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton later sued Round Rock and Leander ISD, accusing the districts of not complying with the law. Paxton's office said school districts that are not part of the lawsuits are still required to display the posters. Supporters of the law argue the Ten Commandments are historically significant and help students better understand U.S. history. Opponents argue the law violates the First Amendment. Legal experts say the case could end up before the U.S. Supreme Court, which has ruled on similar church-and-state issues in the past.A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car on the I-35 service road at US 183 in north Austin.Austin police say that the crash happened a little before 3:45A train derailed in Manor on Monday, according to the Manor Police Department. The derailment occurred near the intersection of E.
