The San Marcos City Council has decided not to move forward with a rezoning request that could have brought a new data center into the city.

After hours of public debate, the San Marcos City Council has decided not to move forward with a rezoning request that could have brought a new data center into the city. Before yesterday's meeting, the community rallied outside City Hall to urge the council to reject the project.

Inside the building, dozens of neighbors spoke out against the proposal. Public comment didn't wrap until after 2 a.m. The plan would have built a $1.5 billion data center near Francis Lane, which is southwest of downtown San Marcos. The project stalled last year after the council failed to reach the number of votes needed to approve the rezoning request. The setback sent the developer back to the Planning and Zoning Commission to restart the process. Last month, the Commission voted to recommend rezoning the property for data center use, clearing the way for the proposal to return. Prior to the council's vote, supporters argued the data center could have brought construction and tech-related jobs along with millions of dollars in future property tax revenue for the city. But opponents say the plan stresses the grid and worsens water scarcity. Council's vote comes after Round Rock City Council unanimously approved a Skybox A.I. data center ordinance despite pushback from community members. Residents there raised concerns about water and electricity usage. In a statement to CBS Austin, Skybox said the project is “a single, energy-efficient data center designed to operate quietly and with minimal impact,” adding it would use a closed-loop cooling system that recirculates water, roughly equivalent to about 15 homes." Round Rock's director of planning said this will help use less water than older facilities.Georgetown High School was placed on lockdown and evacuated Wednesday morning after a bomb threat was reported at the campus, but law enforcement found no suspiTexas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating a four-vehicle crash that sent six people to the hospital on Monday afternoon.Austin police are searching for a man who they say robbed a Walgreens in south Austin before leaving the scene on a bike.APD says that the robbery happened at aThe San Marcos City Council has decided not to move forward with a rezoning request that could have brought a new data center into the city. The founder of an Austin-based water brand was sentenced to over four years in prison for defrauding investors of over $6 million.Todd O'Gara, the 46-year-old f
