A new poll reveals that most Americans believe medical insurance profits and coverage denials played a role in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, though not as significantly as the shooter.

The majority of Americans believe that medical insurance profits and coverage denials are partly responsible for the death of United Health care (UHC) CEO Brian Thompson, though not as much as the person who pulled the trigger, according to a new poll. The survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago found that approximately 8 in 10 U.S. adults said the person who committed the Dec. 4 shooting has “a great deal” or “a moderate amount” of responsibility.

However, some have painted 26-year-old suspect Luigi Mangione, charged with Thompson’s murder, as a heroic figure after his arrest, leading to an outpouring of complaints against insurance companies. Police say the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” were scrawled on ammunition found at the scene, echoing a phrase commonly used to describe insurers’ tactics to avoid paying claims. About 7 in 10 adults say that denials of health care coverage by insurance companies, or profits made by health insurance companies, also bear at least “a moderate amount” of responsibility for Thompson’s death
