PolitiFact contacted the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture to respond to the claim. National Geographic provided an intricate look at the project’s work to dive for and research historical maritime sites of wreckage.Social media users questioned the existence of slave ships and the transatlantic slave trade.
