Grant Shapps, the defence secretary, has sent his 'thoughts and prayers' to the Slovakian prime minister after news of a suspected assassination attempt.Robert Fico is in a life-threatening condition after being shot multiple times, while a suspect, reported to be in his 70s, was detained at the scene.Asked about this, Mr Shapps told Sky News he is 'really shocked'.

He said: 'This is a European country, the prime minister being shot at as I understand, several times and in a serious condition as we speak. 'The thoughts go to his family first and foremost. But also, of course, to the Slovakian nation as well.
