Grant Shapps, the defence secretary, has sent his 'thoughts and prayers' to the Slovakian prime minister after news of a suspected assassination attempt.Robert Fico is in a life-threatening condition after being shot multiple times, while a suspect, reported to be in his 70s, was detained at the scene.Asked about this, Mr Shapps told Sky News he is 'really shocked'.
He said: 'This is a European country, the prime minister being shot at as I understand, several times and in a serious condition as we speak. 'The thoughts go to his family first and foremost. But also, of course, to the Slovakian nation as well. 'This will be very shocking all around and we wish him a speedy recovery.'Pressed on what the motivations could be, Mr Shapps said: 'None whatsoever at this stage.
