A report by the Mass Casualty Commission has a recommendation to phase out the Depot in Regina by 2032 for a multi-year degree program. skpoli
The Depot is a long-standing institution in Regina, as the site of training for Mounties and cadets for some 140 years. The grounds of the RCMP Depot also include a rich history with the RCMP Heritage Centre, in the midst of seeking national museum status. The centre coupled with Depot’s Sunset Ceremony, which incorporates the cadets, are major tourism draws.
During the 26 weeks of training in Regina, prospective Mounties join a 32-person troop and stay on site. The RCMP describes the Depot as having a “paramilitary environment,” which is intended to foster discipline and self-control. Upon completion, cadets become Mounties with more on-the-job training provided in a six-month program.Jerry Forst attended the Depot division in 1966 before transferring to Burnaby, B.C., to carry on a long career in law enforcement.

Police are called for everything, even if it’s not criminal, he noted.
Premier Scott Moe expressed concern the change would prevent Mounties from being placed into communities sooner, noting the RCMP is already experiencing staffing shortages.
