A gunman opened fire early Wednesday morning at an ICE detention facility in Dallas, killing one person and injuring two others.
DALLAS, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 24: Dallas Police investigate the scene where a shooter opened fire on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, September 24, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. Two detainees were killed, and one was wounded after being shot from a rooftop, before the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot.
at an ICE detention facility in Dallas, killing one person and injuring two others. Federal investigators say initial evidence suggests the attack may have been politically motivated. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents recovered unspent shell casings engraved with the phrase “anti-ICE” at the scene. Patel posted a photo of the casings on X. Joe Rothrock, special agent in charge of the Dallas FBI field office, called the incident “the most recent example of this type of attack,” promising it will be met with a "whole of government response." The shooting comes as the Center for Strategic and International Studies prepares to release new findings showing that, for the first time in more than 30 years, political violence linked to the far left has surpassed attacks by the far right. Dan Byman, a senior fellow at CSIS and one of the authors of the analysis, told The National News Desk that President Donald Trump’s policies have been a driving force behind some of the anger. “The agenda of President Trump has caused tremendous outrage among many people on the extreme left,” Byman said. Recent incidents tied to left-wing extremism include the assassinations of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as well as two attempted assassinations of Trump — one in Butler, Pennsylvania, and another at his golf club in West Palm Beach. Authorities also link a shooting at an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas, to the same trend. While right-wing violence has dropped significantly, it has not disappeared. In June, an alleged assassin killed Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband. The rise in politically motivated violence has sparked growing concern among lawmakers. Vice President J.D. Vance condemned the rhetoric fueling the attacks, saying, “If you want to stop political violence, stop referring to police officers as the Gestapo. If you want to stop political violence, stop referring to everybody who disagrees with you as a Nazi. If you want to stop political violence, look in the mirror.” The spike in violence coincides with an exponential increase in threats against public officials, from judges to members of Congress.
