A political organization says Amish voter participation in Pennsylvania will be imperative in the 2024 presidential election.
Jondavid Longo, the Pennsylvania director of the conservative political action group Early Action Vote, said that the state will be able to "close the gap" at the polls this year with the help of Amish voters particularly when it comes to Republican voters.
"And those things of course are faith and family and the ability to practice freedom and do business. You know, you take a look at things like what happened with Amos Miller and his sale of raw milk and some other produce and he was shut down by the state, of course. And that in and of itself is the epitome of what I think the MAGA movement is against." he said. "It's against big government, it's against bureaucratic red tape -- and those things resonate with the Amish.
Dr. Kyle Kopko, a researcher and adjunct political science professor at Elizabethtown College, said he's also seen a trend, particularly in that area. "Every year there seems to be increased efforts to reach out to the Amish community. There really wasn't that much of a turnout in 2016, but we did see a larger turnout in Lancaster County in 2020. We're expecting a similar level in '24, compared to what we saw in 2020 - maybe a little bit more. We're just gonna have to wait and see," he said.
According to Longo, Early Action Vote has "registered scores of Amish voters." He said one way Early Vote Action and other local organizations will ensure Amish voters get to the polls is by setting up ride-shares and car-pools "so that they can make sure that their vote is heard for president Donald J. Trump and our next vice president JD Vance.
