Policymakers are still leaving mothers behind paid civicnation
On a cold, gray morning more than thirty years ago, I was nervous about starting at a new school, longing for friends left behind. I watched the golden tubes of the electric fire burn bright and pulled the blankets tight over me.
Gone are the days when childcare was a national policy priority because women needed it in order to participate in the workforce and contribute to economic growth. That ship sailed in 1971 when President Nixon vetoed the Comprehensive Childhood Development Act. The majority of women that are mothers are working mothers. According to data collected by Kids Count in 2017,—more than 14.9 million kids under the age of 6—are growing up in families where all parents in their home are employed. And it’s been hovering at about this number for at least the last ten years.
