KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has plans to acquire 1,000 non-lethal weapons for its arsenal.
Federal Logistics and Technology Department director Comm Datuk Seri Rosli Ab Rahman said they had identified two types of weapons which could be used to subdue aggressive suspects without causing serious injury or death."The procurement will be suggested to be added in for the 12th Malaysia Plan in 2021," he told reporters at Bukit Aman on Wednesday .
Police had previously used taser guns but the contract has ended, and the weapons had expiry dates that did not guarantee they were still usable. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador was quoted as saying they would like to have in-depth discussions with the Home Ministry to ensure only quality and fully-functioning products were bought.
Hamid was also quoted saying that the use of these weapons was the best solution to assist police officers in critical situations like individuals running amok or who had mental problems without hurting them.
