On July 3, APD released images and video of a person of interest who may have information regarding Rivera's murder. The person is described as a possibly short Hispanic man. APD said they had a breakthrough in the investigation on August 7 after DNA evidence linked Rivera's murder to the unsolved killing of Alba Jenisse Aviles, who was murdered on April 14, 2018, in the 300 block of Old San Antonio Road in Bastrop County. The Bastrop County Sheriff's Office has been investigating her murder since. Aviles was last seen leaving Club Caribe on Felter Lane in Austin, which is just over 3 miles from Rivera's murder site.

APD Homicide Detectives are urging anyone with information about either case to come forward and contact them at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
