Police in Maryland discovered that the suspect in the July murder of a teacher was a man already in custody.

Mariame Sylla, 59, was reported missing on July 30 after going for a walk in a park in Greenbelt. Two days later, some four blocks away, police responded to a report of human remains on the 7300 block of Old Alexander Ferry Road. DNA testing proved that the remains were those of Sylla. That same day, Aug. 1, Harold Francis Landon III, 33, was brought into police custody for an unrelated domestic assault charge.

“Ms. Sylla was a beloved teacher and member of the Greenbelt community. Her murder is tragic. We hope the arrest of Landon provides some comfort to her family and all who knew and loved her," Prince George County Police Chief Malik Aziz said. "I thank the women and men of our Homicide Unit, the Greenbelt Police Department, and all of our partner agencies for their relentless effort to find Ms. Sylla’s murderer and hold him accountable.”

Aziz was unaware of a motive as of a Friday press conference, but he noted that any motive for murder is"depraved." Investigators are also still determining Sylla's cause of death, including where and when she was murdered.Landon is up for bond review on Tuesday, following the holiday weekend.
