TWO suspects have been arrested after they were caught stealing Transnet cables worth half a million rand.
The arrest was made recently during a sting operation conducted by eThekwini Economic Infrastructure task team members within the Bayhead area, which falls under the Brighton Beach policing precinct.Police spokesperson for eThekwini District Captain Carmen Rhynes said the police received information concerning the theft of Transnet infrastructure and swiftly responded, which resulted in two suspects aged 31 years being caught in the act and immediately arrested.
'Both suspects were charged for tampering with essential infrastructure and theft, as well as for being in the possession of and the receiving of property reasonably suspected to be stolen,' said Rhynes. About 745kg of stolen Transnet cabling valued at R500 000 was recovered at the scene, as well as two vehicles and a large number of power tools.The eThekwini District Commissioner, Major-General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, said, 'The eThekwini Economic Infrastructure Task Team is committed to arresting such offenders and ensuring they are brought before a court of law to be prosecuted. Damaging and destroying essential infrastructure in eThekwini will not be tolerated.
