A police pursuit from the streets of San Francisco to the East Bay, ended in a crash on the freeway, causing a major backup on I-880.

San Francisco police officers attempted to stop an alleged robbery suspect and it that quickly turned into a chase from Polk Street, across the Bay Bridge and into Oakland, SFPD said.

“The freeway is behind us and we heard ‘boom, boom, bam!’ and we said, ‘what was that?’” said witness Robert Haynes. NBC Bay Area's SkyRanger showed a Honda SUV with rear damage, which the CHP said was the suspect's vehicle.Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.Haynes was working construction near the freeway and witnessed the end of the pursuit as police drove against traffic to corner the suspect.

"I thought someone was running because I saw them going against traffic," said Haynes."So I knew it was quite serious."
