The funding will be used to increase traffic safety programs — including driving under the influence checkpoints

FREMONT — Fremont police will increase traffic patrols in the coming weeks after the department was awarded a $97,000 grant to help with road safety.

The funding, which was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, will be used to increase traffic safety programs — including driving under the influence checkpoints — and for other enforcement operations focused on reducing dangerous driving behaviors. A number of community presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, bicyclists and pedestrian safety will also be planned, as will officer training and recertification programs.

“This grant funding allows us to support our ongoing traffic safety efforts in the community,” the department said in a statement. “Our intent is to stop the most unlawful and dangerous behaviors that put people at risk and create an environment where everyone feels safe traveling.”
