In our efforts to eradicate illegal firearms and make our communities safer, the SAPS in Nelson Mandela Bay District are making significant strides in the proliferation of firearms. Our SAPS members displayed commitment and dedication and squeezed the space of criminals during the week. A total of 27 firearms and ammunition were recovered in unrelated incidents.
To highlight a few of the successes on Tuesday, 17 October 2023 at approximately 22:40, SAPS Kwazakele members followed up on information of suspects illegally being in possession of a firearm in Livingstone Drive in Zwide. When the two suspects noticed the police, they fled and while doing so, dropped a 9mm Glock firearm and ammunition. The serial number was filed off.
The persistence of the Anti-Gang Unit in Gqeberha paid off when four firearms were recovered in unrelated incidents during the execution of search warrants during the week. The firearms were recovered in Soweto-On-Sea, Izinyoka, Bloemendal and New Brighton. On Thursday, 19 October 2023 at approximately 13:10, SAPS Kabega Park members followed up on information regarding firearms at Nxokozeli Street in Kuyga.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brig Ronald Koll reiterated that, “The confiscation of illegal firearms will assist in making our communities safer and also reducing serious and violent crimes. Removing these firearms from the hands of criminals will result in the decrease of crimes. There are a lot of illegal firearms circulating in the communities and every effort must be made to confiscate these weapons,” added Brig Ronald Koll.
