An officer in Irondequoit, New York, fatally shot a dog that attacked a one-year-old girl and an animal control officer. The incident occurred Friday morning when officers responded to a report of a dog bite. The dog escaped its leash and bit the child and then the animal control officer before being shot by the officer.
Irondequoit, N.Y. — A police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked a 1-year-old girl and an animal control officer Friday morning, according to Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters. Officers responded to Strathmore Circle around 10:30 a.m. for a report of someone bitten by a dog that was still on the loose. They learned a 14-month-old girl was bitten by a neighbor's dog and had a large wound on her leg, according to Peters, and provided first aid until an ambulance arrived.
Peters said the animal control officer attempted to impound the dog in a van, but the dog slipped his collar and attacked the officer — biting him on the calf. The police officer then fired seven rounds into the dog 'as soon as there was sufficient distance between the dog and the animal control officer,' according to Peters. The dog's remains were impounded and are being tested for rabies, since the dog wasn't licensed or vaccinated, according to Peters, who said the owner will be cited for having an unlicensed dog and not keeping it secured. 'We've had a couple incidents where people have been attacked and killed by these pit bulls,' Peters said. 'We've always been allowed to use deadly physical force against the dogs. I can't really blame the dog, but owners need to understand, when you have a dog, you need to be much more responsible than, say, an owner of a Chihuahua. Having an animal is a great responsibility.' The child was hospitalized and appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, according to Peters, while the animal control officer was treated and released. Peters said his department will release body-worn camera footage of the incident after making redactions to protect the victims' privacy
